Elton John has become a member of the select EGOT club after securing an Emmy on Monday night. The 76-year-old musician joined the ranks of Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony winners with his award in the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) category for “Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium.”

The special performance on Disney Plus was live-streamed from Los Angeles, the final stop on his “Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour” of the United States in November 2022.

“I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight,” John said, according to a statement provided to several entertainment industry outlets. “Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful.”

He is the 19th person to win all of the North American entertainment industry’s major honors. The previous EGOT inductee was the actress Viola Davis, who last year became the 18th person — and the third Black woman — to achieve the honor when she won a Grammy for reading her memoir “Finding Me.”

The famous acronym was coined by “Miami Vice” actor Philip Michael Thomas in 1984, who stated his (yet unfulfilled) desire to win all four awards within five years, The Washington Post previously reported.

Past recipients include the actors Audrey Hepburn, Mel Brooks and Whoopi Goldberg, along with composers Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, John was recovering from knee surgery and could not attend the Emmys in person to accept the award.
