An Indian Navy Coast Guard boat has rammed a passenger ferry off the coast of Mumbai , India, killing 13 people, including three military personnel, CNN reports .
The incident occurred when the Nilkamal ferry was heading to Elephanta Island, a popular tourist destination. According to Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, the collision was caused by an engine failure in a naval boat. As a result, the ferry capsized and sank. Rescuers pulled 101 people from the water after the accident, but 13 could not be saved, three of whom were military personnel.
Fadnavis said the state would pay 500,000 rupees to the relatives of the dead. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said another 200,000 would be distributed among the relatives of the victims, while the injured would get 50,000 rupees.
