An elephant in Thailand gave birth to twins baffling her caretakers who only knew about her pregnancy but not about the pair inside, reported BBC.
The 36-year-old mammal first gave birth to a male, but after some minutes, Chamchuri released another little female last week.
According to the outlet, the second birth also caused a surprise Chamchuri as she panicked, forcing caretakers to restrain her so that she could not step on the calf.
While controlling, one of the 31-year-old caretakers was also injured.
His leg was broken, but he “was so happy”. He said: “I couldn’t feel the pain.”
Howevrer, He did not until he came to realise the extent of the injury.
“It’s normal that the new mother will always try to kick or push the baby,” the injured caretaker was quoted.
“…I was afraid that she might break the baby elephant, so I put myself forward and tried to block the mother from the smaller one.”
The founder of Save the Elephants, Ian Douglas-Hamilton was also quoted in the report as saying: “Twins are rarely encountered in elephant populations and male-female twins are even rarer.”
“[They] form around only 1% of births,” Douglas-Hamilton added, mentioning further “Quite often the mothers don’t have enough milk to support two calves.”
Staff at the Ayutthaya Elephant Palace and Royal Kraal shared images and videos of the elephants.
