INDORE: Indore’s Sirpur pond is all set to hold a celebration on World Wetlands Day with foreign delegates and representatives of all 75 Ramsar sites of the country while the secretary general of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands will also mark her presence to highlight importance of such waterbodies along with discussing steps to conserve the same.
“Indore’s Sirpur and Yashwant Sagar pond around a year ago got the prestigious status of Ramsar site. With this, the district administration, with help of Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) and other stakeholders, have sped up different works proposed here to help its conservation and enhancing the biodiversity here,” collector Ilayaraja T said, adding that it’s a matter of pride that Sirpur pond will on February 2 host a national level programme to celebrate World Wetlands Day.
According to IMC additional commissioner Abhilash Mishra, the work to remove water hyacinth from one of the ponds will be completed in about a week while other works, proposed as per the Ramsar site’s rules and regulations, are underway to host the celebration of World Wetlands Day.
“In the programme, foreign delegates, representatives of all 75 Ramsar sites of India and the secretary general of the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Musonda Mumba will mark their presence” he said, adding that a detailed programme is yet to be prepared, but the guests will be offer bird watching while some discussions and release of integrated management plan of Sirpur Pond will be part of the event.
“The 2023 theme for World Wetlands Day is wetland restoration, which highlights the urgent need to prioritize wetland restoration” he said, adding that our country has the largest network of Ramsar sites in Asia – a total 75 wetlands as Ramsar sites covering 23 states and Union Territories of India, making these sites a critical ecological network for conservation of global biological diversity and supporting human well-being.
It is a call on an entire generation to take proactive action for wetlands, by investing financial, human and political capital to save the wetlands from disappearing and to revive and restore those that have been degraded, the senior officials said.
